What weird spark in my soul wants to spend three months out in the wilderness, eating freeze-dried foods and bedding down with bugs and pine needles? I don’t even know if I’m suited for it. I’ve never tried it, and for all I know it will make me miserable, but every time I head out to the wilds I find myself wanting to try.

The site was very different from our previous excursion. There were amenities I wasn’t expecting (running water, showers, flushing toilets) at a central facility a short walk away from our cabin. The Taum Sauk trail was brutal compared to the pleasantly winding four mile hike we took. The shower afterwards was decadent. The only drawback during the hiking was all the dry leaves. It wasn’t until we hit cleared parts that we realized just how loud they were.

I was achey by the end of the day. Something about the hike really did a number on my legs, reminding me that while my shape has improved vastly, I still have a ways to go.

But we all agreed it was a great spot, and we all plan to go back sometime in the next few months. A different experience from Taum Sauk, but nonetheless — a pleasant one.
